Lucius Walker Attends Medical School Graduation in Havana
Reverend Lucius Walker, leader of the American religious organization Pastors for Peace, attended today the graduation of the Salvador Allende Medical School in Havana. He thanked Cuban revolution leader Fidel Castro for enabling the free training of doctors from the United States in the island.
Walker arrived in Havana on Friday heading the 21st Pastors for Peace Friendshipment Caravan made up of 85 caravanistas from the US, Canada, Ireland, Germany, England and Mexico. The group carried 100 tons of humanitarian aid mainly for Cuban children in 12 buses, nine of which will be donated to the island.
Walker participated in the graduation ceremony of 230 doctors, nurses and health technicians from 18 countries, including Cuba and the United States (14).
Addressing the graduates, Walker said he was honored to represent not only the US-Cuba Friendshipment Caravan but also to express the American people’s growing feeling that Cuba is guiding the way into world health development.
Walker noted that more than 40 American doctors have graduated at the Havana-based Latin American Medical School (ELAM), while Doctor Juan Carrizo, ELAM’s rector, announced that with this promotion more than 8,500 students from different countries have graduated from the school since the beginning of the project.
This is the first graduation using the teaching clinic method, a model of work-integrated learning.
