India Designs World's Cheapest Computer  

Experts with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) said Thursday they have designed and built the cheapest computer in the world, which will sell for under 35 dollars when it hits the market next year.

The computer prototype was presented in this capital by Indian Human Resources Minister Kapil Sibal. It is the size of a portable computer (laptop) with a touch screen, measuring 7 inches wide, and has 256 kilobytes of random access memory (RAM), a wi-fi device for wireless connection to the Internet, and facilities for reproducing multimedia.

Instead of a hard disk, the computer has an external memory of up to 32 Gigabytes of capacity, which can be connected to one of its USB ports, just like a keyboard.

The Indian government representative said the new prototype is designed mainly for students, and its price could go down even more once its mass production starts.

The computer was designed by IIT experts in Rajastan and Kanpur in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore.
